Even if I tried really, really hard… I do not think I would ever like it!

I was swatching to find out how many stitches I was getting with the 2-ply of the Charcoal merino, and the results after knitting the swatch were far from what I had imagined, liked, or hoped for!

Remember this was the fibre:

And this was the single I spun:

Now… this is the result after doing a 2-ply of 2 of those singles:

Not SO ugly, huh? Wait to see the knitted swatch. Here it is:

Really… I’m not kidding you. it is all bumpy and more for felting or the trash can, than for a sweater.

Now, I also swatched the single, and there, the world stopped spinning around me, and I was able to breath normally again:

So this is it… I think I will try to unply the full jumbo bobbin I have with the 2-ply, to get 2 singles again, then finish off spinning all the fibre, give it a good wash in Eucalan, and rethink the project I will be knitting it into.

Moral of the story: it was a good way to learn that not all pretty singles will look great as a 2-ply if you screw up at plying!

I couldn’t help it… she is so cute!

Have you seen the funny, intruding squirrel, who is perfectly on focus on Jackson and Melissa Brandts’ vacation picture?

Here she is:

I want to be in, I want to be in!

I want to be in, I want to be in!, she seems to say...

Well, now thanks to this site, Squirrelizer, at http://www.lutralutra.co.uk/, you can add the little cutie into any picture you want, and you even have parameters to customize her size into the photo.

Here she looks amazed by the beauty of Akumal, Mexico:

Three more down, and now a new merino on the Lendrum

300 grams of the merino I got at the Black Lamb were spun into singles, and now I am spinning the charcoal merino I got in Buenos Aires.

I think I will be using them for Kate Davis Paper Dolls sweater (http://needled.wordpress.com/2009/02/19/paper-dolls/), so I might do a 2-ply for both… well… I need to swatch first! I would be using the gray for the body and the dark pink for the dolls, of course!

A very good video for spinners – Navajo ply

Hey there spinners!

I’ve found a video made by Sarah Anderson, that I thought is really good to learn the navajo ply technique. It is very clearly explained and the technique used looks smooth and neat. She does not stop to grab the single, and uses her pinky finger to smooth it, really good tip! No wonder why it has been rated 5 stars.

Enjoy!

A week to relax

We are back from a very sunny, relaxing trip to Mexico. We stayed in Akumal, just a few kilometers South of Playa del Carmen.

We are not beach people, but we enjoyed this trip immensely, as we really needed a break to ‘fully recharge our batteries’!

The hotel is located in the middle of the jungle, beside the sea, really beautiful! The beach is a bit rocky, so we brought water shoes and everything was fine, so fine that we went for either a swim or to do snorkeling a lot.

We were not sure about all the fuzz around these all-inclusive hotels, but in a way, it certainly helped us disconnect from every worry, even something as basic as eating and drinking!

There were activities organized by the entertaining staff: archery, outdoor shooting range, dance classes, beach volleyball, and even Spanish classes!
